The Soldier Relief Commission was started over 100 years ago (1865) to assist Union soldiers and their families in times of need. Now we are called the Veterans Service Commission and have a wider range of responsibilities.

The Veterans Service Commission stops accepting applications for financial assistance (formally known as soldiers relief) and travel at 4 P.M. on the Friday, prior to the scheduled Commission meeting. Our meetings are on the 1st & 3rd Mondays of each month at 5 P.M., except if the Monday is a legal holiday, then the meeting will be held on Tuesday.

"The Athens County Veterans Service Office IS NOT A BRANCH OF THE VETERANS ADMINISTRATION. WE DO NOT APPROVE OR DENY VA CLAIMS".

However, we do assist veterans and their dependents in applying for and maintaining their VA benefits. Call today for an appointment!
